What is the TeachersCOP?
The TeachersCOP is an international event created by the Office for Climate Education (OCE), to highlight to global politicians and decision-makers the work of teachers, the challenges they face and the key role they play in the global climate response. The first edition took place during the COP26 held in Glasgow and counted with the participation of more than 500 teachers from more than 35 different countries, the second edition took place during the COP27 held in Sharm El Sheikh and brought together 1500 teachers. Last year, in the framework of the first ever Education pavilion the OCE renewed this gathering, by inviting, for the first time in person, 5 teachers from diverse geographical origins to COP28 in Dubai. Following these successes, the OCE has decided, in partnership with VVOB, to renew the experience and once again bring the voice and the great work of teachers, this time to COP29 to be held in Azerbaijan from November 11 to November 22, 2024.
Who can participate in the TeachersCOP?
This year the TeachersCOP is aimed at all primary and secondary teachers as well as their trainers, school directors or inspectors.
How can I participate?
1) Submit a project
We want to know what you are doing! For this fourth edition of TeachersCOP, we are looking for projects and initiatives that you have already implemented on climate change education in your classroom or establishment. These projects must fit into one of the four categories that align with the 4 pillars of the Greening Education Partnership:
- Greening Schools | Objective: Enhance the school's climate readiness by adopting a whole-school approach to sustainable development. This comprehensive strategy transforms teaching, learning, school operations, governance, and community interaction to embed sustainable practices deeply. | Examples: In your school, you implemented renewable energy systems, established zero-waste protocols, or developed green schoolyards, setting a standard for sustainable educational environments.
- Greening Curriculum | Objective: Integrate climate education across all levels of schooling to make climate awareness and action a fundamental aspect of all learning experiences. | Examples: You integrated climate science across various subjects, created a pedagogical resource on climate change, or implemented adaptation or mitigation projects with your students, effectively incorporating climate education into the school curriculum.
- Greening Teacher Training | Objective: Incorporate climate education into teacher training programs, enhancing the educational community's capacity to address climate issues. | Examples: You have trained teachers, trainers or other stakeholders in the educational community on climate change education, so that they have the skills and knowledge needed for effective climate education.
- Greening Communities | Objective: Engage the entire community in lifelong learning and active participation in climate action. | Examples: You've spearheaded local climate action campaigns in collaboration with community institutions, forged partnerships with NGOs to launch impactful climate projects within schools, or initiated research projects that involve both scientists and your students, to foster a proactive environmental community dedicated to sustainable practices and education.
To submit a project, simply share it with us by directly completing this form before October 3rd (11:59 p.m. French time). Projects can be submitted in English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
2) Participate and vote live on our TeachersCOP event
The TeachersCOP is an hybrid event (in-person and virtual attendance) held live from the host country of the COP on the eve of the start of international climate negotiations.
During the TeachersCOP, hundreds of teachers from around the world connect simultaneously to talk about climate change education through simultaneous translation in French, English, Spanish and Arabic.
This year teachers will be able to discover climate change education projects implemented by teachers around the world and will be able to vote to choose 4 projects which will be presented by the OCE and VVOB teams to decision-makers at the heart of the COP29.
